Erica’s professional journey with breastfeeding began after the birth of her second son in 2011. Even after overcoming the challenges exprienced while breastfeeding her first son, with her second nursling she continued to draw upon the support from her local lactation consultants and a breastfeeding peer suport group. As a transplant to the Philadelphia area without immediate family nearby, Erica relied on the help from her supportive husband, but also her “family” of female friends, coworkers, and peers who were also new moms with similar experiences in breastfeeding.
In an effort to help others as she had been supported, Erica became a trained breastfeeding counselor with Nursing Mothers Alliance (NMA), offering phone support and in-person group support. She became involved in the training of new counselors and served on the Board of Directors for NMA for several years. Soon, Erica realized she had discovered her passion in helping mothers and babies, and decided to move beyond her career in the sciences and pharmaceutical industry to pursue the lactation consultant profession. Erica completed the enriched lactation education courses through Lactation Education Resources and completed a clinical internship at Paoli Hospital before sitting for the IBCLC exam in July 2015 and successfully earning the credential as an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC).
